About Allo
The creation of Allo fibre is a traditional Nepalese skill that has been used for countless generations. The fibre is wild-harvested from a species of giant nettle that grows weedily at high altitudes, providing business opportunities for the landless and small-scale farmers. Plants are harvested by cutting above the ground without disturbing the soil (thus preventing erosion) and grow back with the next rainy season. The inner plant fibre is spun into a yarn which can be dyed and woven into fabric using handlooms, strengthening the economic position of women who typically perform the spinning and the weaving.
